This is the first Certified Nature Explore Classroom in Omaha that was created in association with an elementary school.

It is the 11th certified Nature Explore classroom in the state of Nebraska and the 40th in the nation. This school is a part of the Omaha Public Schools system whose Early Childhood classrooms use Creative Curriculum.

Caterpillar Stones

Donations and volunteers from many organizations helped to start and complete this beautiful classroom. From local business owners, churches, service organizations, families and friends, to a local Omaha High School Advanced Construction class, this classroom is continuing to develop.

Kellom Elementary used quality products and craftsmanship throughout the space to ensure durability and sustainability. A local nursery helped to create an overall design plan for a butterfly garden and to help incorporate other plantings to be visually appealing and appropriate for children and their families.

Art Area

Bright paint was used in creating bird feeders, bird baths and planter boxes throughout each of the areas that catch the eye. Brightly colored fabric softens the entryway, which greets little feet, as children decide what adventures they should partake in on any given day. Shovels, trucks and pails allow all a chance to dig, scoop and feel the earth between their fingers.

Students, families and local Girl Scout troops helped design unique, artistic pizza paver stepping stones that are being used throughout the classroom. To engage families in the outdoor classroom, a number of activities are planned throughout the year, including family activity nights, spring planting days, family fun day and bring your parent to school day.
